What’s Up Wednesday #31 - Ask better Questions, Shadow Careers, Long Term COVID impacts

Happy Wednesday!

Ask better questions

Computers are useless. They can only give you answers. - Pablo Picasso

👽 This week I finished „The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy“. The main plot is about multidimensional beings looking for the answer to the universe, life, and everything. They build the most sophisticated computer and after millions of years calculating it presents the answer: „42“. The insight of an answer can not be higher than the quality of the question.

Shadow Careers

Sometimes, when we’re terrified of embracing our true calling, we’ll pursue a shadow calling instead. The shadow career is a metaphor for our real career. Its shape is similar, its contours feel tantalizingly the same. But a shadow career entails no real risk. If we fail at a shadow career, the consequences are meaningless to us. Are you pursuing a shadow career?

Are you getting your Ph.D. in Elizabethan Studies because you’re afraid to write the tragedies and comedies you know you have inside you? Are you living the drugs-and-booze half of the musician’s life, without actually writing the music? Are you working in a support capacity for an innovator because you’re afraid to risk being an innovator yourself? If you’re dissatisfied with your current life, ask yourself what your current life is a metaphor for.

That metaphor will point you toward your true calling.

Long term COVID impacts

😱 “In a stark sign of the economic inequality that has marked the pandemic recession and recovery, Americans as a whole are now earning the same amount in wages that they did before the virus struck — even with nearly 9 million fewer people working.” - LA times

❓What kind of repercussions we will face in a couple of years is not so clear. What about all the countries who get most of their money from tourism? What about the people working in small shops and restaurants that have been closed for a long time and at the same time face fierce competition from Amazon and Co.?
